Topic: The Science of Magic
From ancient conjurers, to quick-handed con artists, to big ticket Las Vegas illusionists, magicians throughout the ages have been expertly manipulating human attention and perception to dazzle and delight us (or scare us, or steal our watches). Of course you know that the phenomena of cognitive and sensory illusions are responsible for the "magic" of a magic trick, but you've got to admit it still kind of freaks you out when some some guy in a top hat defies the laws of nature right in front of your eyes. Tonight Luigi Anzivino will explain how magicians use our brains as their accomplices in effecting the impossible — and what scientists can learn about the brain by studying the methods and techniques of magic.
Speaker: Luigi Anzivino, Neuroscientist, Magician, and Learning Studio Coordinator at Exploratorium
Location: Axis Cafe, 1201 8th Street (btw. 16th & Irwin) San Francisco
Three days notice, two days to practice, one goal... Weezer's Hootenanny! This has been one of the most exhausting and gratifying weeks of my life. I heard less than a week ago on the radio that Weezer would be throwing a hootenanny. The only way to get in would be to audition by submitting a performance of a Weezer song with an instrument and a friend. I just started learning guitar a couple months ago...and I'm definitely addicted. The dexterity and dedication required to play guitar rivals that of performing magic. Playing guitar and singing at the same time is like rubbing your tummy and patting your head... while singing. I remember being sore from practicing certain magic moves repeatedly, but magic has never given me such sore hands and callouses. Below is the video of Pork and Beans that I submitted to play with the band. My friend Simran is playing the tablas. Halfway through our takes, he started beatboxing!
I just came back from playing with Weezer at the Alameda Navy base's O'Club. There were about 80 people invited. It was hot, sweaty, and one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
After the first take of Pork and Beans, the producer said, "That was the best Pork and Beans of this tour!" Yeah San Francisco! No photos or videos were allowed, but here are some of the official pictures/video from Live 105 and a blurry cell photo.
Rivers Cuomo, Brian Bell, Scott Shriner were all very affable. Even though Patrick was out with a knee issue, the band still sounded amazing. Live 105 will be playing our hootenanny versions of the songs. There will be a CD made later with the best takes from the hootenannies.
I knew all that Rock Band playing would pay off :P
